Better off with a 2x4 or whiffle ball bat than a hi-point.

Sounds like OP has zero experience with firearms, so for home defense I wouldn’t recommend a pistol.
Go get yourself a WalMart special 12/20ga for $250. You don’t need much practice with a shotgun and you’re least likely to shoot through walls.

I know enough about firearms not to drive 3 hours for a hi point. I’ll take it for $300 if you drive it to Tucson.
