I know the buying climate has changed since I made the decision to reload. I typically would not reload common calibers that are cheap and easy to find.
I use a lee turret press, the best option in between single stage and progressive but still simple and easy to learn. I check my powder load on EVERY round, which is hard to do with a progressive press. I have had from time to time underloaded or overloaded ammo, which IS very dangerous. Things happen, you can get distracted and will while reloading. Being able to check each load as you are reloading is a piece of mind and safety thing. I only started checking each round for powder level after I found I mis-loaded ammo, like I said, I check every round now. I load only calibers that are hard to find or well over a buck a round to reload unless I want to make up a special load not commercially available. I currently load 221 fireball, 762x25mm, 30-30, 7mm-int-r, 45LC, 45-70 and I also cast bullets for black powder. I normally wouldn't reload 40sw. You have to weigh how much all the equipment will cost vs how much you shoot and how much components cost along with all the stuff you will need for each caliber.
